After a week full of upsets we welcome everyone back to the Upside Play Power Rankings. A bulk of teams were officially eliminated from the playoff race this week, most notably the defending NFC Champs, the San Francisco 49ers. Washington has left the backdoor open for the Cowboys to sneak into the playoffs as they failed to take down Seattle at home, and for the third week in a row the “worst defense in the NFL” kept their opponents under 20 points while forcing some turnovers along the way. The Ravens / Dolphins playoff race continues to heat up as both teams are hot on winning streaks down the stretch. These last two weeks look to be extremely competitive across the league for almost every team excluding the 13-1 Chiefs, who can lock up a #1 spot + 1st round bye with a win or tie this week vs the 4-10 Falcons. We’re in for an exciting finish to one of the most bizarre season’s the NFL has ever seen!
Climbing: Mitchell Trubisky and his Bears are on a two game winning streak, a stretch that includes multiple 30 point games from the offense in must win situations. Mitch in these past 2 games has a stat line of: 39/54, 469 yards, 4 TD’s & just 1 interception. He’s been efficient and facilitated the offense. Now let's get to the real breakout guy, David Montgomery has been playing out of his mind in the past few weeks. In week 14 he averaged 10.3 yards per carry and worked the Houston defense for 103 yards and a TD. Last week he doubled down on his performance, carrying the ball 32 times for 146 yards and two scores against the Vikings in a must win ball game. If the Bears keep this offensive production and get a little luck from the 49ers next week against Arizona, we could be seeing a new #7 seed.
Crashing: It’s tough to ignore a team on top of one of the best divisions in football losing to a team that has been blatantly tanking with an 0-13 record. The Rams were flat out terrible this week in their 23-20 loss at home vs the Jets. Jared Goff has been the king of the average all year long and this week was no different, he has 209 yards with 2 TD’s and a pick against a team that allowed 30 points a game heading into the week. The Jets dominated time of possession here holding the ball for nearly 10 more minutes against a team who typically has long drives and a stingy defense. This loss happening this late in the season confirms that we haven’t seen any sort of offensive consistency from this Rams squad, fans should be a little nervous down the stretch.
